Jasmine Couture is a God-inspired vision, founded in Orange County, California. It curates fine Batik styles that are beautifully handcrafted by artisans from countries all over the world, such as Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Africa, and many more! The significance of Batik is that it is usually not from huge manufacturers; rather, it is handmade from small mom and pop stores.
Instead of founding the company in self-interest, Jasmine Khoo envisions bringing her community together through more than just Batik styles. Her desire to transform clothing and household pieces from silk, cotton, and various materials inspired her to create exquisite masterpieces for everyone to enjoy.
Because Jasmine Khoo prioritizes her community, Jasmine Couture was able to donate rice to Cambodia for the recent flood victims and lend help to numerous food pantries and outreach centers, thanks to each and every product purchased from Jasmine Couture. The founder cannot express enough how much gratitude she has to those supporting the mission and values of the company.
While the techniques vary in each country, Batik is generally made through the usage of wax to manifest beautiful patterns on fabric.
Beautifully dyed and handmade batiks can be used to create richly colored quilts, apparel, home décor, and more! The fabric that is used to develop batik for Jasmine Couture is of a high standard.
Tightly-woven batik fabric that is prepared for dyeing is meant to be durable to withstand the process of producing batik. Artisans use a method of dyeing fabric by hand, in which the fabric is covered by wax made of glues or starches to prevent dyes from penetrating patterned design areas. The multicolored and blended effects of the batik are obtained by repeating the dyeing process multiple times, with the initial pattern of wax boiled off and another design applied before dyeing again in a new color. Since the method of hand-dyeing used to create patterns on fabric yields different results, each piece from Jasmine Couture is individually unique.
Cambodia’s silk production and weaving have an extensive and rich history that dates back more than a thousand years. Women from all across southern Cambodia have looms, which are equipment that is used for making fabric by weaving yarn or thread, in their homes to hone the skills and art that have been passed down from their mothers and grandmothers.
The process of producing silk garments begins by feeding silkworms with mulberry leaves. It takes a month for them to grow and develop then three days to spin in a cocoon. Cocoons have two layers which are the raw outer and the fine inner silk layer. Once their cocoons are formed, they are put into hot water for the larvae to be killed.
The silk threads are then dyed using a Cambodian technique called HOL. HOL uses a resist-dyeing technique in which ties are applied to thread in very precise areas so that the dye will not color specific portions of the thread. Once the thread is ready to be dyed, it is placed in clay pots filled with water and natural dye.
The last two steps in creating silk garments are spinning the thread into a thicker, larger thread, and then putting them onto looms for weaving. Sometimes, setting up a loom and preparing it for weaving may take up an entire day. After that, it requires a great amount of skill to weave thread into fabric.
Cambodian krama is 100% handmade and originated from Cambodia. However, the real origins of krama and how it came about are unknown. The use for krama varies from scarves, baby hammocks, bandanas, and more.
The first step into creating krama scarves is dyeing with ingredients such as leaves, fruits, and tree bark. These ingredients are placed into large boiling cauldrons to form natural colors. These colors are then used to dye cotton. Similar to silk thread, cotton thread is also spun and put onto a loom for weaving.
Jasmine Khoo, a fashion entrepreneur who aims to bring a cultural touch to clothing and accessories, was born in Cambodia and immigrated to the United States in the mid-1970s. Throughout her life, she has faced countless obstacles and calamities. She was pronounced dead as a stillborn and then brought to life three days later, and she had three kidney transplants as she got older. Due to these experiences, she struggled to live a normal life but she is now passionate about living life to the fullest and spreading love through faith, compassion, and purpose.
Before escaping the harsh conditions in Cambodia, Jasmine was extremely malnourished and nearly abandoned numerous times during the Khmer Rouge killing field. At a young age, she and her family fled the war-torn country for several weeks without food and water. Walking barefoot through mountainous terrain, she was persistent in surviving with the guidance of her pregnant mother.
Her life in America was as equally troublesome as in Cambodia. She had her life nearly taken away from her due to kidney failures. At the young age of 21, Jasmine had her first kidney transplant. Despite the previous transplant, she still had to undergo two other kidney transplants later on in life. Through these life-changing moments and her faith in Jesus Christ, Jasmine became a resilient woman with strong passion and drive. She learned and recognized that life is so precious and each moment is invaluable. With this, Jasmine took her faith into practice and has dedicated her life's mission to give back to her community with immense love and compassion.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the mandatory lockdown maintained social-distancing practices and barred people from going outside to prevent the spread of the virus. While staying at home, she brought her God-inspired dream to reality with the birth of Jasmine Couture in July 2020. By using her passion to help the community, the cultural designs of Jasmine Couture bring people together through beautiful Batik art and appreciation of culture, each piece uniting them with those in need. As someone who experienced hunger and the pains of the world first-hand, her outcry to help humanity resonates from deep in her heart. Through the grace of the Lord, she wants to utilize her company to aid marginalized populations by donating 60% of proceeds to organizations, charities, and food banks.
